OEAS Warns Biafrans of
Nigerian State Security Hackers
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 7, 2015
The Nigerian State Security
Service (SSS) has launched an aggressive campaign against Biafran activists
using both Internet and email. SSS has not only been actively harvesting names
and email addresses of know Biafran activists but has duplicated and hijacked
email accounts.
The State Security Service’s
aim is to infiltrate and provide disinformation to and about Biafran
independence activists. OEAS has documented hijacked email accounts and
duplicate email accounts amounting to identity theft. These compromised
accounts are then emptied out of information and used to entrap others, send
false information and computer viruses, and transmit scandalous, obscene, and
fraudulent information in the name of Biafra to discredit and demoralize the
movement.
This mirrors malware tactics
used against Tibetan independence activists for years and attributed to the
Chinese People’s Liberation Army intelligence unit. China is a major supplier
of arms and technology to the Nigerian armed forces and SSS.
Beware Attachments - Share
documents, but don't email them. Opening email attachments is like letting a
hacker into your computer. Instead, use easy file-sharing services like Drop
Box to share sensitive documents.
Think Before You Click -
Don't just click on any old link you receive. Unless you were expecting it,
there's a strong chance that the link contains a virus that will infect your
computer as soon as you open it.
HTTPS is for Secret - Safe -
Secure! - When you are using the web, look at the website address in your
browser to see if there is an 'S' in at the beginning, after HTTP. If you see
it, there is a secure connection between you and the website. If you don't see
it, everything you are looking at or emailing to someone else can be spied on
very easily.
Use Strong Passwords -
Strong passwords can keep you safer online. Make them long, complex, unique,
with special characters and change them often — and never, ever set an account
to automatically log in or store your password.
Update your Software -
Updates to your programs and operating systems are essential in order to patch
security vulnerabilities. Use an email virus checker program like Avast.
