ABOLITION OF OSU,
OHU & UME
FROM ALA IGBO –
OUR SHORTEST CUT TO FREEDOM
- JOSEPH OKECHUKWU
Celibacy International Initiative is a group of Christians who believe that moral chastity and sexual purity should form the core of our weaponry in a bid to secure lasting freedom for our oppressed people, so we are secondary celibates. We are also aligned with Global Igbo Alliance.
Celibacy International has been on the move to build broken sociocultural bridges and mend broken hearts by seeking a total abolition of all obnoxious practices in the Eastern Region of Nigeria and beyond. In their quest for a permanent solution to the perceived bondage of the Igbos and their kits in Nigeria, the organization found very strong reasons to believe that certain outdated practices in the Igbo culture may have contributed largely to the predicament of Igbos in Nigeria.
In view of the aforementioned, Ohu, Ume, Osu Caste Systems, other related practices and the reluctance to carry out an Atonement Exercise for the sins of Transatlantic Slavery have been identified as major inhibitors that require immediate attention, vis abolition/atonement.
The OHU, UME AND OSU caste systems are ancient practices in Igbo land that discourage social interactions and marriages with a group of persons called OSU, OHU or UME simply known in other parts of the world as "the Untouchables". It is an outdated tradition with no basis for its continued practice anywhere in Igbo land. Osus are allegedly dedicated to deities (Alusi) while Ohus are said to have inherited slavery as a socio-cultural placement in perpetuity. They are looked down upon as inferior human beings separated from Nwadiala, nwa-afor or Ama-ala (the freeborns).
On the 20th of March1956, Igbo legislators in the Eastern House of Assembly, Enugu abrogated the then common practice of referring to people as OHU, UME or OSU. The fines imposed have discouraged the public expression of the word OHU, UME, OSU, etc. Anambra State Government in 2001 signed into law the amended bill banning OHU, UME AND OSU caste systems in the state. But due to lack of enforcement, the practice has gone on unabated.
It is on this premise that Celibacy International Initiative secured an enduring partnership with the kingdom of Nri and by extension, the Eri Dynasty Traditional Rulers, both kingdoms regarded as some of the oldest in the world, and known to be the birth places of the entire Igbo nation and beyond. On December 28, 2018, both kingdoms shall lead the entire Igbo race through a robust abolition exercise that will include stringent proclamations against people who may continue in the practice after abolition. Christian religious leaders of all denominations will offer prayers for forgiveness and atonement as well.
It is our belief that when these events are successfully completed, our land would've been cleansed and the freedom of our people from sociopolitical and economic stranglehold unquestionably and irrevocably attained.
Immediately following the abolition and atonement exercises will be a concerted effort to unleash legal luminaries, home and abroad who will help activate and enforce the 1956 law already on papers, implying that from then on, anyone caught discriminating on the basis of these obnoxious practices, shall be thrown into jail for a minimum of 5 years, depending on the gravity of their offenses.
